Coaches Corner
Belvidere Girls Bowling Coaches Corner for 11/24 and 11/25
We as coaches decided to use the Preseason Tournament on Friday @ Cherrybowl just as it was: A Preseason Tournament. Our goal was to get as many girls in to bowl and see what they can do. As luck would have it, a JV team backed out allowing us to have a second JV team. By doing this we were able to get everyone to bowl at least 2 out of the 4 games. This tournament allows the girls to relax a little and get used to the competition.
At the Varsity level, the girls finished 4th out of 16 teams. They did well for the first tournament. Most of these girls are bowling Varsity for the 1st time and it took a little time to adjust. Alyssa Young had high game with a 244 and Kyra Tschumper had a 236. Brittany Shere led the team with a 3 game series of 597. Overall it was a good starter tournament for us.
At the JV level, one team finished 5th and the other finished 12th out of 16 teams. For some of these girls it was the first tournament that they had ever bowled, and for others it was the first time they had ever bowled in another bowling center. By the third game, the girls started to get into the game and had a little fun with it. As a team they bowled consistent improving each game.
After bowling on Friday, we decided to get the team together and have a pasta party. By starting this early in the season, it allows the girls to get to know each other a little better.
On Saturday, we boarded the bus for a 2 hour bus ride to Rock Island. This has always been a tournament that we like to attend and were looking forward to it.
The Varsity team finished 6th out of 17 teams. Melissa Christianson led the team with a 6 games series of 1139 and Melissa Knox had the high game of 224. The team as a whole struggled through the first 2 games. They were throwing good first balls, but were unable to carry the shot or get a good break. The girls finally got their momentum going in the 3rd game and then it was time for break. After the break, the girls started a little rough, but soon picked it up in the 5th game, finishing strong in the 6th. The first weekend is now out of their system and we look forward to the upcoming weeks.
On the JV side, the 3 coaches got together and all we could come up with was “Wow”. Coming into this tournament we did not exactly know what to expect from the girls. Rebecca Kozuck stepped up as a team leader and led the girls through cheers, getting them more into the game. By the end of the day, everyone was on their feet cheering and having a good time. Every game the team score went up approximately 25 pins, except for the last game were it went up about 75 pins. The girls finished 4th out of 21 teams. Christy Spurlock led the team and medaled with a 3 games series of 590 and 6 game series of 1124. Rebecca also finished with a 6 game series of 1071 and had a high game of 236 that also medaled.
The girls did great for the first weekend! We hope to see everyone at our next tournament and at all of the matches.
