Sophomore Thunder Lose to Hononegah 40 – 15

The Belvidere North Blue Thunder Sophomore football team struggled in their opening night performance against the Hononegah Indians. The Indians drew first blood with 7:37 on the clock. The score was a result of a 48 yard run through the line. The PAT was good and the Indians were on the board 7-0.
The Thunder’s first possession of the game begins on their own 19 yard line and they drive hard to the other end of the field only to fumble the ball. The Indians recovered the ball on the their own 32 yard line. With :49 seconds to go in the 1st quarter the Indians scored again from 20 yards out. The PAT was good and the 1st quarter would end with the Indians ahead 14 – 0.
The Thunder almost remained scoreless in the 2nd quarter but at 8:47 the Indians would score their first of two TDs for the quarter. With a good PAT the score would now be 20 – 0 and the next score was at 3:32 with a 6 yard run. This time the Indians mixed it up by attempting a 2-pt conversion and it was good. The score was now Indians 28, Thunder 0.
The Thunder with :47.8 seconds left on the clock kick a 33 yard field goal. #1, Miguel Andrade was the kicker that split the uprights. The Thunder enters the locker room at halftime down by 17 points.

The 3rd quarter begins and at 7:46 the Thunder fumble the ball and the Indians recover and give themselves field position in Thunder territory on the 52 yard line. At 4:54, #29, Ryker Rodakowski intercepts an Indian pass and returns the ball to the Thunder 40 yard line. The Thunder cannot move the ball and turn the ball over.
At 2:32 the Indians score off of a 63 yard run up the right sideline. The PAT was blocked but the score was still 34-3 Indians. The quarter would end with a score of 34 – 3 Indians.
One the very first play of the 4th quarter, #13, Kurt Siemsen, rips the ball out of the hands of an Indian running back. This gives the Thunder possession on their own 22 yard line. It was 3:39 before the Thunder scored again. This came off of a 33 yard pass play from #11, Ryan Gamble to #10, Justin Ellingson. The 2-pt conversion attempt was no good and the score was now Thunder 9, Indians 34.
The final Indian score of the game came with 1:21 left on the clock and the Indians were able to convert the PAT giving the score Indians 40, Thunder 9. The Thunder were not giving up and Gamble connects with Ellingson again for another score. The PAT was blocked but the final score remained Indians 40, Thunder 15.
This sophomore team showed that they came to play football. I am convinced that they will attack their next opponent hardily to prove they are the real deal.

The Belvidere North Blue Thunder did not have the season opener that they had hoped for Friday night. The game began with a first quarter that was a dead heat at 0 – 0. Both teams were making adjustments to bring in the first score of the game. That first score did not come until 6:41 left in the 2nd quarter.
Early in the 2nd quarter #21, Austin Smaha recovers a Hononegah fumble and stops the Indian momentum. This gives the Thunder 1st and 10 on their own 23 yard line. The Indians would stop the Thunder but not be able to capitalize and turn the ball back over on downs to the Thunder.
With another 20 seconds off of the clock the Indians intercept a Thunder pass and give themselves great field position on the Thunder 20 yard line. The ball would have been within the 10 yard line but an illegal block in the back penalty by the Indians after the interception put them on the 20. The Indians pound the ball even closer and it takes a few minutes off of the clock to the next score. With 4:25 remaining in the 1st half the Indians take a 1 yard up the middle run for the score. The PAT was good and the score was now Indians 14, Thunder 0. This would end up being the score going into the halftime activities.
The 2nd half of play had the Indians receiving the ball and returning to their own 31 yard line. The Thunder defense held 3 downs and punt. The Thunder had 1st and 10 on their own 20 yard line. The 1st play of the series resulted in an interception by the Indians. The Indians stayed in Thunder territory with the ball placed on the 48 yard line.
At 8:26 the Indians dropped in a 3 yard TD run but missed the PAT. The score was now Hononegah 20, Thunder 0. With 1:23 left on the clock #17 Tony Tindle recovers an Indian fumble giving the Thunder 1st and 10 on their own 29 yard line. The clock ran out on their series and with 11:54 remaining in the 4th they turn the ball over on downs to the Indians. The Indians had good field position with the ball on the 37 yard line.
The Indians had a series of scores in the last quarter of the game. A 1 yard run, at 9:51 with a missed PAT. Score was now 26 – 0. One at 4:39, a 17 yard TD run, up the right side of the line, with a good PAT. Making the score 33 – 0. The last and final score of the game was a 9 yard TD run with a good PAT. This would make the final score Hononegah 40, Thunder 0.
The team did a pretty good job keeping their heads they played hard. There appeared to be an extensive amount of cramping as players came hobbling off of the field pretty regular especially throughout the 2nd half of the game. Just some minor refinements and this Thunder team will be ready for next week.
