North Sophomore Loses to Harlem.

The North sophomores were back to receive the opening kick-off. #30, Elijah Greer and #2, Tony Tindle were the returners they return the ball back to the 20 yard line. The Thunder would not be able to move the ball during their first possession and would struggle throughout the 1st quarter.

At 7:35 Harlem scores their first touchdown off of an 18 yard run to the right side of the Thunder defense. The PAT was no good and the score was now Thunder 0, Harlem 6.

At 7:20 a Harlem defensive player was injured during a tackle. He was transferred St.
Anthony’s for observation. BNHS and the fans hope this player has a speedy recovery. The Harlem team would continue to control the ball for the rest of the 1st quarter.

At 8:10 a long pass sets up a Harlem score early in the 2nd quarter. The score was a 3 yard run right up the middle of the offensive line. The 2-point conversion was no good. The score was now Harlem 12, Thunder 0.

At 2:37 Harlem scores again from 2 yards out. It was 2nd down and the running back takes to the left side of the line and scores. The 2-point conversion pass was complete and the score was now Huskies 20, Thunder 0. This would be the score going into halftime.

The 2nd half of play is started with a kick-off from Tindle. Right away at 9:41 Harlem would score off of a 60 yard run. Another 2-point conversion pass is complete and the score was now Harlem 28, Thunder 0.

At 3:29 the Thunder fumbles the football and Harlem recovers on the Thunder 27 yard line. The Thunder defense holds and takes over on downs giving them 1st and 10 on their own 23 yard line.

:34 seconds remain in the 3rd and the Thunder throws and interception. Harlem has the ball 1st and 10 on the Thunder 29 yard line. They would not score but the quarter would end.

The last score of the game would come at 6:50 from a 2 yard run by Harlem. The PAT was no good but the final score was Huskie 34, Thunder 0.

North Varsity Falls to Harlem in Season Opener

The season opener for the Belvidere North Blue Thunder did not turn out the way everyone hoped but the team played a very hard fought game. The game started with the Thunder kicking off and defending the North goal. Harlem received the opening kick and returned the ball to their own 37 yard line.

At 11:12 Harlem drew first blood and scored a touchdown off of a 28 yard run. The PAT was good and the score was Harlem 7, Thunder 0. The Thunder kick returners #10 Corey Wennmacher and #13, Alex Tripp was poised to give the Thunder good field position. The kick was short and #73, Steve Russo, returned the ball to the Thunder 35 yard line.

The Thunder would then have their chance and would begin their opening possession. The Thunder would not be able to advance the ball and would turn the ball over on downs on their own 30 yard line.

With 4:10 remaining the Thunder defense hammered the Huskies and #21, Dominique Hall, recovered a fumble giving the Thunder the ball on the Huskie 42 yard line. The Thunder would not be able to capitalize on the turnover and the 1st quarter would end with the Thunder trailing 7 – 0.

At 10:21 in the 2nd quarter the Thunder takes the ball over on downs from Harlem on their own 19 yard line. Stopping a drive in the red zone. The Thunder would end up punting the ball away.

At 5:00 #22, Ken Anderson would take the ball 8 yards into the end zone for the Thunder. Anderson hit the left side of the line and sprinted in for the score. #64, Lauren Waddell hit the PAT and this tied the game at 7 a piece.

The next score would come at 3:09 when Harlem would hit a 35 yard pass for the TD. The PAT was good and Harlem goes back up by 7 more points. Harlem 14, Thunder 7. In a last ditch effort to score before the half with 4.5 seconds left on the clock Harlem attempted a field goal and missed. Closing the first half of regulation play with Harlem ahead 14 – 7 over the Thunder.

The opening drive for the 3rd quarter for the Thunder was looking promising but unfortunately ended in turning over the ball on downs. Giving the Huskies 1st and 10 on the their own 30 yard line the time on the clock was 9:37.

8:41 brought another Harlem score, but wait the 36 yard run was called back by an illegal block penalty on the Huskies. However, in just a little over 3 minutes later the Huskies would score on a 2 yard run. The PAT was good and the score was now Harlem 21, Thunder 7. This would bring an end to the 3rd quarter.

The 4th quarter brought frustration from the Thunder. At 9:24 the Thunder quarterback throws an interception. The referee calls a roughing the passer penalty but states that the ball was already caught so it was after the play and Harlem took possession.

Harlem fights to the 20 yard line and attempts a field goal with 3:15 remaining in the game. They miss and the Thunder take over on the 20 1st and 10. A perceived bad call caused more frustration emanating from the Thunder bench. With 3:05 remaining and a penalty backing the Thunder up the referee throws an unsportsmanlike flag on the Thunder bench. Putting the offense on their own 4 yard line.

The Thunder was unable to move the ball out to safety and Harlem was able to kick a field goal in the final seconds of the game. This would make the final score Harlem 24, Thunder 7.

Coach Tobin told his team after the game that “he and the coaching staff was very proud of them and that they should hold their head high. Harlem is a good ball club, and you guys showed guts all the way.”

Although, the score was not in the Thunder favor the team showed that they will be a force to contend with this season. Good game Thunder.
