Thunder Sophomore’s struggle against Guilford Vikings 39-8.

The Belvidere North Blue Thunder Sophomore football team was hammered by the Guilford Vikings Friday night. The Thunder was strapped with injuries and just could not execute when required. The first quarter of play was pretty uneventful just back and forth football with neither team really standing out in charge of the game.

At 2:43 in the 2nd quarter the Guilford QB rolls out to the right side and passes the ball for a touchdown. Fortunately, the PAT was no good and the score was Vikings 6, Thunder 0. This would be the only score of the 1st half of play.

The crowd was treated to performances by the Young Thunder Cheer Camp participants. There were lots of future high school cheerleaders showing their stuff for the half time performance. Hats off to the high school cheer and dance squads for taking these young girls and giving them a chance to perform for their parents.

The 3rd quarter begins and 3 minutes come off of the clock before the Guilford Vikings put the ball into the end zone. A 26 yard run by the QB gets the points. The 2-point conversion is no good and the score is Vikings 12, Thunder 0.

At 4:29 the Thunder throws an interception putting the ball on the Viking 20 yard line. A little over a minute later the Vikings score and a successful PAT puts them up 19-0.

2:13 the Thunder was on the kick-off return when the Thunder receiver was smacked and the ball came flying out of his hands. Guilford recovers the ball and has 1st down on the Thunder 25 yard line. They would not score in the 3rd. The score 19-0 Vikings.

The last quarter and a bad quarter for the Thunder. They seemed to self destruct as the Vikings became more and more pumped up. Immediately in the 4th quarter the Vikings score again this time from only 1 yard out. PAT was good and the score was Vikings 25, Thunder 0.

6:26 and 4:06 bring two more scores from the Vikings. These would be the final two scores for the first team of the Vikings.

Finally with a bit over 3 minutes remaining #30, Elijah Greer would take the ball 86 yards for the score. The 2-point conversion would be good and the score would be Thunder 8, Vikings 39.

Although the score did not show it I think that the sophomores played a more intense game than last week and will improve as the season progresses.

VARSITY GAME

The Thunder Defensive Line holds Guilford in their 29-6 victory.

Thunder Slap Guilford Vikings 29-6.

The Belvidere North Blue Thunder Varsity football team set out to get a victory tonight after losing to Guilford last season. They did it and they did it in commanding fashion. The Thunder was set defending the south end zone with #13, Alex Tripp and #10 Corey Wennmacher back to receive the kick-off. Wennmacher would be seeing more time at QB since #12, Keith Larson is out for three weeks with an ankle injury. Guilford boots the ball into the end zone so the Thunder starts their 1st possession on the 20 yard line. The first possession would end with a turn over on downs.

The Thunder defense returned the favor by stopping the Vikings and getting the ball turned over on downs. This set up a 96 yard touchdown run by Wennmacher. #64, Lauren Waddell hit the PAT and the score was Thunder 7, Vikings 0.

At 4:01 the Thunder takes the ball over on downs again. The ball was placed on the 27 yard line. Then 4 plays later the Thunder turns the ball over on downs again. Except for Wennmacher’s 96 yard run both teams seemed to be matched very closely in the 1st quarter.

The 2nd quarter had more of the same until late in the quarter when Wennmacher connected with #31, Jake Billon for a 5 yard touchdown pass. Waddell would just miss the PAT so the score was now Thunder 13, Vikings 0. The Thunder kicks off to the Vikings and the Vikings fumble the ball with 1:01 on the clock. #17, Dylan Roberts recovers the fumble and the ball is placed on the 41 yard line of the Vikings. The Thunder methodically moves the ball towards the end zone. At the 1st half buzzer Wennmacher connects with Tripp for a 27 yard pass play right in the middle of the field for a score. The PAT was blocked and the Thunder enters the locker room at half leading the Vikings 19-0.

The 2nd half kick-off was botched by the Thunder and the ball was fallen on by a Guilford player. The Vikings had decent field position on the 40 yard line of the Thunder. The first play by the Vikings brought a fumble and #58, Emerson Eggers of the Thunder covers the ball. The Thunder takes over on their own 32 yard line.

At 6:45 a defensive lineman, #75, Wayne Dippel sacks the Viking QB for a nice loss. This backed the Vikings up to their own 46 yard line. The Vikings would not be able to move the ball and the quarter would end with the Thunder leading by 19.

Early in the 4th quarter Waddell makes football history with a BNHS 30 yard field goal. This gave the Thunder a 22 to 0 lead. The kick-off brought more excitement when the Viking receiver fumbles the ball. The Thunder recovers but a personal foul penalty on the Thunder backs them up to the 47 yard line. With a little over 6 minutes left Wennmacher jukes his way into the end zone for another score. However, another personal foul penalty reversed the score. The Thunder coaches were telling their team to play football and leave the nonsense out of the game.

5:55 left in the game and Wennmacher does it again with a 5 yard touchdown run. Hitting the right side of the line low and hard for the score. Waddell good for the PAT and the Thunder was winning 29 – 0. It looked like they might get a shutout but at 2:24 Guilford sneaked a score off of a 3 yard run. The PAT was no good and the final score would be Thunder 29, Vikings 6.

The Thunder played a much more solid and emotional game than last week. Thunder keep up this intensity and you will be at the top of your class, well done.

The following quotes were obtained from my friend Paul Arco

Coach Tobin:

"I couldn't be happier. This win means a lot to our program. Guilford is well coached and has been in the playoffs each of the past four years."

"Our defense really came of age. We made many fundamental mistakes last week in the first game. We tried to correct that this week."

"Corey has so much quickness. He works hard and has really tried to put on weight this year. He was our QB last year and the team MVP. But this year he said 'I'll play anywhere.' We could have folded after his interception on the first drive. But he came back with that 96-yard run. That took away any momentum for Guilford."

Corey Wennmacher quote:

"The offensive line gave me plenty of time to throw. Anyone could have done what I did tonight. All the credit goes to the blockers. This was a fun game. Guilford is such a good team."

Tyler Nelson quote:

"Corey has really matured. He always gets the tough yards."

"Our line did a great job and our defense held them scoreless for 3 1/2 quarters. We knew we could win this game. It was a real team effort"
