North Sophomores Just Fall Short

The Belvidere North Blue Thunder sophomores just fell short of a win Friday night. There was a good showing of fan support for the Blue Thunder home opener. The Thunder took the kick-off and used their first possession to puts six points on the board and takes the lead. The end of the 1st quarter of play the score was Freeport 7, Thunder 6.

Both teams hammered on each other during the 2nd quarter and the next score did not come until there was :23.1 seconds left on the clock. Freeport scores off of a 21 yard run of the right side of their offensive line. The PAT was good and the score was now Freeport 14, Thunder 6.

The Thunder crashes back with 17.5 seconds left in the half. #8, Alan Hawkins, drives his way into the end zone with a 4 yard run to score. The 2-point conversion was no good and the score going into the locker room at halftime was Freeport 14, Thunder 12.

With 6:48 on the clock #41, Tim Graf, intercepts a Freeport pass and returns the ball 54 yards. This is the start of a series of plays that at 5:30 produce another Thunder touchdown. #37, Zack Stintson, takes the ball 10 yards into the end zone. #48, David Kissel is good with the PAT and the score is now Thunder 19, Freeport 14. This would be the score at the end of the 3rd quarter.

8:33 into the 4th quarter when #33, Garret Thresher, intercepts a Pretzel pass and gives the Thunder 1st and 10 on the Thunder 27 yard line. The Thunder pounds the ball into the Freeport line. This forces Freeport to call a timeout at 2:40.

The clock dwindles down to 1:29 and Freeport carries the ball 5 yards for the score. The 2-point conversion attempt was no good but the Pretzels regained the lead 20-19. There was :51.6 seconds left and the Thunder quickly call a timeout to regroup before the clock ran out. The game was sealed when Freeport intercepted a Thunder pass and returned the ball to the 4 yard line.

The final score was Freeport 20, Thunder 19. The team played a great game and a hard fought game.

Belvidere North Varsity Lose to Freeport in Opener

Thunder Varsity Loses to Freeport

The Thunder lost their home opener after a hard fought effort. Freeport had an outstanding running back the caused havoc for the Thunder. Freeport drew first blood at 10:53 on the clock. The Freeport running back ran 79 yards for a touchdown after breaking right through the middle of the line. The PAT was good and the Pretzels took an early lead 7-0.

10:41 and the Thunder is back for the kick-off. They fumble the ball and it is recovered by the Pretzels and is placed on the Thunder 47 yard line. The Thunder would return the favor at 9:27 when #40, Mike Nathan recovers a Freeport fumble.

#10, Corey Wennmacher would strike with his second touchdown in as many games by scoring the first Thunder touchdown of the night. It came with Wennmacher scrambling 16 yards for the score. #64, Lauren Waddell would hit the PAT and the score would be tied at 7-7.

There was only a little over 4 minutes left in the 1st quarter and the same Freeport running back would return the kick-off 75 yards for a touchdown.  The PAT was no good but the score was Freeport 13, Thunder 7. He was not done, two minutes later he ran a Thunder punt back 68 yards for another score. This time the 2-point conversion was no good and the score was now Freeport 19, Thunder 7. This would be the score at the end of the 1st quarter.

Early in the 2nd quarter Wennmacher and #31, Jake Billon connects for a 26 yard Thunder touchdown. Waddell hits another PAT right on the mark and the score is Freeport 19, Thunder 14.

3:43 left in the 3rd and Freeport scores off of an 8 yard run, a sweep to the outside right of the offensive line. The PAT was good and the score was Freeport 26, Thunder 14. This would be the score at the end of the 1st half.

There was no scoring in the 3rd quarter just hard hitting football from both teams. Each team advanced the ball a couple of series then was forced to punt. The score remained Freeport 26, Thunder 14.

The 4th quarter is when Freeport picked up their last 14 points. At 10:48 they punched in a 3 yard run. Converted the PAT and the score was Freeport 33, Thunder 14.

2:10 remaining and the Wennmacher and Billon combination struck again this time with a 17 yard passing score. Waddell was perfect again and the score was Freeport 33, Thunder 21. The final score of the game came when Freeport hit another 3 yard run and converted the PAT to make the final score of the game Freeport 40, Thunder 21.

This team played very hard and has come together as a team significantly from their last game. Coach Tobin told his team “keep your heads high, the officials and everyone I see tells me that your players play with a lot of heart. We are improving every week we will surprise some coming up.”
