North Sophomores Struggle with East

The Belvidere North Blue Thunder football teams traveled to Guilford stadium to play Rockford East Friday night.  The sophomores had a very difficult game and ended up falling to East 14-12.

The 1st and 2nd quarter of play were plagued with penalties and miscues on behalf of both teams. There were numerous turnovers and interceptions. The first half would close with a score tied at 0-0.

East scored the first touchdown of the game in the 3rd quarter with 8:53 showing on the clock. The score came off of a 4 yard QB keeper of the right guard. The 2-point conversion would be good and the score was now East 8, Thunder 0.

The first Thunder score of the game came with a 46 yard sprint to the end zone by #37, Zach Stintson. The Thunder attempted a 2-point conversion and it was no good. The score at 1:56 left in the 3rd was East 8, Thunder 6.

:58 seconds left in the 3rd and East scores again. This time a 30 yard touchdown run. They again attempted a 2-point conversion but it was no good. This made the score for the end of the 3rd quarter East 14, Thunder 6.

The 4th quarter was hard hitting both teams were looking to be victorious. At 1:06 #22, Dylan Roberts scored a 2 yard run of the right side of the line. The 2-point conversion was no good. The score that would end the game was East 14, Thunder 12.

Thunder Boom! North Wins First Game

The Thunder varsity lost the coin toss and was elected to kick-off to the East ERabs. At 7:44 the Thunder fumble the ball and the ERabs recover on the Thunder 4 yard line. East capitalizes on this turnover and scores the first touchdown of the game. The 2-point conversion was no good and the score was East 6, Thunder 0.

A couple of minutes click off of the clock and East takes over on downs on the Thunder 22 yard line. There is 5:52 left in the first and the Thunder defense gives a little ground to East. Two more minutes click off the clock and the Thunder defense shuts down the East advance on the Thunder 4 yard line. The quarter would end with the score East 6, Thunder 0.

At 9:57 East fumbles the ball on a routine 4th down punt and the Thunder scoops up the ball and gets 1st and 10 on the 10. Thunder fumbles the next play then has too many men on the field and gets a penalty. East ends up with the ball on their own 17 yard line.

#:03 remains in the first half of the game and East would take over on downs as the Thunder threatened on the East 10 yard line. Their possession would not last long when #12, Keith Larson would recover an East fumble and give the Thunder 1st and 10 on the 13 yard line. This would begin the setup for #31, Jake Billon to be able to score a 1 yard touchdown run. #64, Lauren Waddell would be good for the PAT and the score would be East 6, Thunder 7.

There was 1:53 remaining in the 1st half when #53, Ben Kunsak would block an East punt. #22, Ken Anderson would grab the ball and sprint to the left side of the field and be brought down on the 1 yard line. Unfortunately for the Thunder an illegal block in the back penalty would bring the ball back to the 13 yard line. The clock would run out before the Thunder got a chance to cross the end line. Going into the half the score was East 6, Thunder 7.

The Thunder had first possession of the 2nd half of the game. The Thunder could not move the ball and was forced to punt. At 9:09 #11, Tyler Nelson intercepted an East pass giving the Thunder good field position on the 36 yard line. Again the East defense stopped the Thunder advances.

At 2:56 #10, Corey Wennmacher broke through the line and sprinted 70 yards for a Thunder touchdown. The Waddell PAT was blocked but the score was now East 6, Thunder 13. This would be the score at the end of the 3rd quarter.

There would be no scoring in the 4th quarter until late. At 4:36 East would complete a 20 yard touchdown pass but miss the 2-point conversion. The score would be East 12, Thunder 13. With time running out East would try an on side kick. The Thunder would handle the kick with ease and have decent field position on the Thunder 41 yard line.

At 4:22 Anderson would break some tackles and double back to the other side of the field and give the Thunder some breathing room by scoring a 60 yard touchdown. Waddell would miss the PAT but the score that would be the final was East 12, Thunder 19.

Coach Tobin told his team that this was the first real Blue Thunder victory and everyone showed a lot of heart. Great Job. Boylan is next week lets do it.
