Victory Slips Away for Thunder

Thunder Sophomores Fall in Defeat to Indians

When I arrived at the game there was just a little over 1 minute remaining in the first half of play and the Thunder holding their own. A very bad call by the sideline referee put the Indians in scoring position with just over 1.4 seconds remaining. The North coaching staff argued vehemently that the North defender had the same right to the ball that the Indian receiver had. To no avail and the Indians ended up scoring an 11 yard touchdown just as the time ran out. The score going into the locker room at the half was 22-20 Indians.

I am not going to itemize each of the remaining Indian touchdowns that happened in the 3rd and 4th quarter. As the weather continued to degrade; the Thunder continued to lose ground and the scoring margin increased. The Indian’s seemed to be in control of the game both on offense and defense. The Thunder struggled to move the ball and a 4th quarter fumble seemed to seal the victory for the Indians. The final score would end up being Indians 53, Thunder 26.

Victory Slips Away from Thunder

Unfortunately, the 2008 mud bowl between the Hononegah Indians and the Blue Thunder ended with the Indians sliding to victory. Enough of the bad puns, Paul and on with the game.

The game opens with some major excitement for the Thunder fans when it took just 2 plays for the Thunder to go 57 yards for the score. #10, Corey Wennmacher, who would end up with well over 200 yards for the game and 3 touchdowns would score the TD off of a 52 yard scramble up the right sidelines. #64, Lauren Waddell would split the uprights for the PAT and the Thunder would be out in the lead 7-0.

The Indians did not appear to be impressed with the offensive display of the Thunder and used 2 plays to go 60 yards for their first score. The PAT was good and the game was tied at 7.

At 8:40 the Indians scored again off of a 30 yard TD run. The Indian running back McWilliams proved to be a big powerhouse for the Indians. He would cause havoc for the Thunder defense throughout the night. The PAT was good and the score was Indians 14, Thunder 7.

The 1st quarter ended with the Indians pounding their way down deep into the red zone of the Thunder. They were able to bust the ball into the end zone early in the 2nd quarter for the score. The PAT was good and the momentum was shifting in the favor of the Indians. The score was Indians 21, Thunder 7.

The weather continued to get worse with spotty heavy rain and a very cold breeze. The middle of the field was solid mud. I walked across the field between games and it was like an ice rink. These conditions plagued the Thunder offense. The Thunder running backs were struggling with controlling the ball and had at least 3 maybe 4 turnovers in the 1st half.

About midway into the 3rd quarter Wennmacher slips through the line again and out sprints the Indian defense and goes 75 yards for his 2nd score of the game. Waddell was good again for the PAT and the score was now 21 – 14, Indians.

The 4th quarter was hard fought and for everyone in the stands they could no longer make out who was who out on the field. The uniforms of both teams were so full of mud that you could not make out the number of the players.

The last Indian score would come at 9:54 when the hard charging McWilliams pounded in 27 yards for the 6 points. Everyone thought the PAT was going to be automatic but was bobbled by the holder. The holder picks up the ball and sprints for the corner of the end zone but was brought down just shy of crossing the line. Score now Indians 27, Thunder 14.

About 7 minutes later Wennmacher hits the end zone for his final score of the night. 10 yards right up the middle and he was in for the 6. Waddell was automatic for the PAT making the score Indians 27, Thunder 21. The Thunder looked like they might threaten but were intercepted with just :24 seconds left in the game.

The clock would run out, the mud would get sloppier, and the Indians would be victorious. The final score of the contest would be Indians 27, Thunder 21.
