Victory Slips Away for Thunder

Thunder’s Season Ends in Wheaton

The Belvidere North Blue Thunder’s 2nd season ended in the 1st round of the Class 5A playoffs Saturday against the St. Francis Spartans. I believe that there was a fan base that traveled from Belvidere that out numbered the Spartans. Thank you to all of you for supporting the Thunder.

St. Francis was back to receive the opening kickoff and was defending the East goal. The kick was off and the game was started. The Spartans banged the ball back 9 yards to their own 35 yard line. Ten plays later the Spartans had crossed into the end zone and put the first point up on the board. The PAT was good, so at 7:34 the Spartans were leading 7-0.

#21, Dominique Hall and #10, Corey Wennmacher were back to receive the kickoff from the Spartans. Hall would end up with the ball can brought the Thunder out to their own 38 yard line. The Thunder would be 3 plays and punt. The punt was fielded back at the Spartan 17 yard line.

The Spartans would eat up the clock and finish their 2nd drive with a 35 yard score. The PAT was good and the score was now Spartans 14, Thunder 0.The Thunder would get one more chance to score before the end of the 1st quarter but went 3 plays and out.

The Spartans would take their possession into the 2nd quarter and score when driving 80 yards in just 10 plays. The score came off of a 8 yard run. The PAT was good and the Spartans were leading by 21 points. It looked like the Thunder was sparked by moving the ball over the course of 9 plays. The Spartans defense did stop the drive on their own 37 yard line taking over the ball on downs from the Thunder.

With 2:40 left the Spartans score again from 48 yards out. The PAT was automatic and the score was Spartans 28, Thunder 0. The Thunder would end the first half unable to answer any of the Spartan scores.

Coach Tobin’s half time speech motivated the Thunder right out of the chute with Hall taking the 2nd half kickoff about 65 yards for the score. #64, Lauren Waddell, hit the PAT and the Thunder was on the scoreboard. The excitement continued when Waddell kicked an onside kick and it was recovered by #17, Dylan Roberts, of the Thunder. The Thunder have the ball 1st and 10 on their own 43 yard line. The excitement diminished quickly when the Thunder threw an interception. The Spartans would have the ball 1st and 10 on the Thunder 45 yard line.

At 9:45 the Spartans take the ball 17 yard run for a score. The PAT was good and the score was Spartans 34, Thunder 7. About 17 plays later the Thunder would have possession and would seal the fate of the game. The Thunder fumbled the ball and the Spartans recovered in Thunder territory.

The Spartans would again work diligently on the clock until the clock read 2:11 remaining in the 3rd. A Spartan 6 yard TD run with a good PAT makes the score Spartans 42, Thunder 7.

Early in the 4th quarter the St. Francis sidelines and fans cheer robustly as the starting offense is pulled off of the field. The Thunder defense was able to shut down the drive of the new players.

The Thunder would put 7 points up on the board following a 7 yard run from Wennmacher and a PAT from Waddell. This brought the score to Spartans 42, Thunder 14.

The Spartans would score one more time and be successful with the PAT. The score which would end up being final was St. Francis 49, Belvidere North 14.

Coach Tobin had this to say to his team following the loss. “We have had a great season and I hate to see it end this way. “ This reporter agrees with Coach Tobin that the Thunder football team has had a very good season and should be proud of their accomplishment. When looking back over the season there are lots of things that stick out in my mind that smacked the Thunder head on. However, through everything this team held together and proved that it was not going to give up.
