BELVIDERE – The official colors for Belvidere North High School were approved by the District 100 Board of Education at the Monday meeting. A committee led by new principal Richard Kirchner gave a presentation to the Board with recommendations on the school colors and mascot.
Students on the committee talked about how the decisions were made and how important the colors and names are to a school. These choices need to be made early because many things have to be ordered with the insignia or logo, and teams will start forming prior to the school being open.
The class of 2008 will be given the choice of staying and completing their senior year at BHS or transferring to the new school.
A few sample athletic uniforms wee shown to the Board with the suggested colors of dark blue, scarlet, and vegas gold.
"We looked at other Illinois school colors and worked with Jostens on getting the uniforms to show how great this looks," said Kirchner. "We learned a lot about colors from this task, and thanks to committee member Troy Yunk, we now know that black is not a color.
"The committee decided on "Pride" for the team's name, because we hope the students take pride in their school and because of a pride of lions. The mascot will be a lion."
The Board unanimously approved the recommendations and thanked the students, staff, and community members on the committee for their hard work.
Other decisions will get community input, such as the insignia, the school song, and the actual design of the lion. Board members hope that the students will not only take pride in their school, but in themselves.
Kirchner hopes that a mural can be painted on the wall in the new cafeteria depicting "Pride." The Board liked the idea and will discuss options.
Central Middle School may adopt these colors in the near future, as it is the feeder school to Belvidere North. Belvidere North High School is on schedule and will open in fall 2007.
