Varsity Volleyball

This week's Belvidere High School Athlete of the Week is Shannon Vandenbroek. Shannon is a member of the Varsity Volleyball team.

Shannon is a two year varsity starting setter and was fortunate enough to be brought on to varsity as a sophomore which enabled her to play and experience winning a regional championship that year with her sister Kristi. Shannon starting playing volleyball at the age of 9 until she progressed into a top club volleyball player at Rockford Volleyball. Playing club volleyball for Rockford is nearly a year round commitment which involves playing in national qualifying tournaments all over the country. The competition was incredible as some of these girls are the best in the USA. All club players credit this type of competition for making them top volleyball players. The current BHS team is loaded with club volleyball players from Rockford and Fusion and that is why the team is very strong this year. The team recently won the St. Viator tournament and is currently in 2nd place behind a very strong Hononegah team who is also loaded with top club volleyball players. Shannon is near the top of the league in assists totals and is hoping that the team peaks for a state play off run. She is very much enjoying the season under the coaching of Nik Butenhoff and playing with some of her friends ever since she first started playing.

Shannon is a credit to herself and the Belvidere High School sports program. Congratulations on being selected this week's Belvidere High School Athlete of the Week!
