BSMS vs. Woodstock-Olson (7th Grade)
Belvidere South Middle School opened its 2007 football season with a 7th grade game against Woodstock Olson on Tuesday, September 4. The BSMS Bucs won the game, 22-0. The Bucs scored on the second play from scrimmage as Shane Mains took a handoff around the left side of the line and ran 63 yards for the score. Walter Johnson scored the 2-point conversion on a pitch from quarterback Dylan Barr around right end.
After a couple of stalled drives by both teams, Belvidere scored before halftime on a counter to Mains covering 27 yards. This time, quarterback Taylor Arrango scored the 2-point conversion on a keeper to put the Bucs ahead 16-0.
The fourth quarter saw BSMS score their last touchdown as Mains took a pitch around left end and ran 49 yards to the end zone. Dalton Dotzlers run up the middle was unsuccessful as the scoring ended 22-0 in favor of the Bucs.
Offensively, Shane Mains was the main focus, running for over 130 yards in the game. Fullback Luke Hearn gained valuable yards up the middle to set up many of Mains' runs and both quarterbacks, Barr and Arrango, ran the offense efficiently during their time in the game.
On defense, Anthony DeMito played very well at linebacker, registering well over 10 tackles, many of them for losses. Woodstock Olson didn't register a first down until the 4th quarter. Recovering fumbles for the Bucs were Josh Hauser, Taylor Arrango, Ian Staples, Benjamin Karlson, and Walter Johnson.
Coach's Comment:
"Overall, this was a great team win, especially considering we had only 9 days of practice compared to Olson's 14 and our first game compared to Olson's second. The goal is to continue to improve, getting better at every position, every practice."
