FOOTBALL BSMS 8TH GRADE VS. BCMS 10/10/09 The South Middle School 8th Grade Bucs travelled across town Saturday morning to duel with Belvidere Central on a cold, windy day. South prevailed in a tough hitting contest 10-0. The game started with Central getting the opening kickoff, stalling on offense, punting, but getting a first down on a roughing the punter penalty. Another first down for them was slow in coming. South's defense took control and the offense capitalized by scoring with fullback Ismael Cortez rushing in from 6 yards out. The 2-point conversion was run in by Devon Dean and the Bucs had the early lead, 8-0. After that score, another defensive stop by the Bucs led to great field position for the offense. A penalty on 4th down and 1 yard for a first down created 4th and 6 on Central's 8 yard line. A gain of 2 yards turned the ball over to Central on their own 6 yard line. On the next play, Dean sacked Central's quarterback in the end zone for a safety and a 10-0 lead at halftime. The second half saw both teams move the ball on offense, but each drive stalled with no scores. Maurice Jackson had an interception for the Bucs. A Central punt was blocked and recovered by BSMS. The Bucs might have scored again as they were down on Central's 5-yard line as time ran out in the game, but the score didn't change in the second half. Season recap: BSMS finishes the season with a 5-1 record. Offensively, linemen Kyle Knight, Dakota Stevens, Skyler Lawhorn, Gino Hartman, and Alan Penze did a nice job all year long. Tight end Garrett Hyser added to the blocking, while Tyler Morris and Chris Colquett did well at the wide receiver position. Dual quarterbacks Jacob Fondrk and Adam Becker each brought good skills to the position. Fullbacks Ismael Cortes and AJ Slaven ran hard all season. Halfbacks Josh Walker, Devon Dean, Maurice Jackson, and Devin Deddo ran with speed and toughness in every game. Defensively, KC Pavlak was a beast as a tackle on the defensive line. Adrian Cardoso, AJ Slaven played the other tackle position with strength and aggressiveness. Defensive ends Connor Boland and Joe Byers kept running backs contained every game. Linebackers Ismael Cortes, Devon Dean, and Zach Ziriaxe blitzed and filled their gaps like no other. Cornerbacks Chris Colquett and Carlos Villarreal covered receivers and protected the outside with equal strength. Safeties Maurice Jackson and Jacob Fondrk let nothing get behind them. The defense gave up 2 touchdowns all season long, one when the game was no longer in doubt (Burlington Central 52-6) and one in a 2nd overtime on a fumble into the endzone (Sycamore loss 6-0). (A third score was against the offense on a fumble recovery return). The defense this season was outstanding and definitely the strength of the team!!! Good luck to all players in high school. The future of Buc football looks strong!
