FOOTBALL
BSMS at Sycamore (7th Grade)
Belvidere South Middle School's 7th grade football team traveled to Sycamore Thursday in a matchup of "A" teams. BSMS won the game, 37-0. The scoring started early and often for South. Receiving the opening kickoff, they marched down the field, using the no-huddle offense for the first time this season, until a fumble stopped the drive at the 8-yard line. Three plays later, Trevor Austin and Dalton Gooding made a tackle in the end zone for a safety and BSMS was ahead 2-0.
Getting the ball in good field position on the kick from the 20, South marched down the field again, this time scoring a touchdown on Cole Johnson's run after a botched pitch. That covered 22 yards from scrimmage, but about 32 from the pick-up after the pitch. Shane Mains added the 2-point conversion running off-tackle, making the score 10-0.
Sycamore got the ball back on offense, but it was only momentary as Josh Hauser picked off a pass, again giving BSMS good field position. From there, quarterback Taylor Arrango scored from 42 yards out on a scramble. He added the 2-point conversion on a conventional QB keeper to the left side making the score 18-0 in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, South added to its lead on a 42-yard Arrango punt return. At this time, South attempted a point-after-touchdown in the kicking mode. Unfortunately, it was short and wide left leaving the score 24-0.
Later, Walter Johnson scored on a 10-yard touchdown run to the right side. The PAT was again wide and short left, making it 30-0 at halftime.
The second half started with Sycamore receiving and stalling on offense after 3 plays. The punt was returned by Hauser, running it 45 yards around left end for the score. This time Shane Mains nailed the PAT making it 37-0 and ending the scoring.
Besides the scores, Luke Hearn ran well up the middle from the fullback position to set up the outside runs. Dylan Barr effectively ran the offense from the QB position and the entire offensive line is to be commended for opening up nice holes. From left to right they were Brad Ford, Justin Ramos, Kyle Rueff, Connor Eisenhauer, Anthony DeMito and Ian Staples.
Defensively, the Bucs were outstanding. The only real gains made were in the final quarter and even those were minimal. D-Tackles Austin and Gooding with DeMito at middle linebacker plugged the middle while ends Mains and Hearn kept everything contained on the outside.
Coaches Comment:
"I wanted to come out with the no-huddle in this game and look sharp. With the exception of one play just before half, we did exactly that. It was a great team effort to get the shutout and 37 points is a lot of points to score in a 7th grade game."
