Game Summary:
Belvidere South Middle School's 8th Grade football team officially opened its season Thursday, losing a hard fought game to Burlington Central, 12-8. South was to open last week, but storms washed that game out.

After a drive for each team that resulted in yards but no points, BSMS got on the board first with Luke Hearn scoring a touchdown from 1 yard out. Max Hendrickson added the 2-point conversion putting Belvidere ahead 8-0.
Burlington countered in the 2nd quarter, driving the field and scoring a touchdown from 4 yards out. The conversion was stopped, making the score 8-6. South regained possession on the following kickoff, was driving the field, but fumbled, giving away a scoring opportunity.

The second half saw Burlington stall on offense and BSMS took over and again was driving when another fumble gave it back to Burlington. They proceded to march the field and score, again missing the 2-point conversion. The score was then 12-8.
With time running out, BSMS was forced to desperation passes, one finally being intercepted. A penalty allowed South one more opportunity, but time ran out before a score could be made.

Solid performances were turned in by Max Hendrickson at fullback, Shane Mains at running back, and Luke Hearn at defensive end. Mains had an interception on defense and Mains and Ian Staples had receptions on offense.
BSMS continues its season next week with a "B" game home Monday against Dekalb Huntley and an "A" game away at Dekalb Huntley Thursday.
