The Belvidere South Middle School 8th grade football team continued their winning ways, easily defeating the Sycamore Spartans, 44-0.
The scoring starting as the the Bucs held the Spartans on the opening drive, forcing them to punt. Taylor Arrango fielded the punt on the run, veered toward the right sideline, avoided a tackle, and sprinted 67 yards for a touchdown. Luke Hearn ran off tackle for the 2-point conversion and South had a 8-0 lead just minutes into the game.
After another defensive stop, Arrango ran a quarterback keeper to the right for 32 yards to put South ahead 14-0. Max Hendrikson added 2 more on the conversion to bump the lead to 16-0.
A deep kickoff, poor offensive play, and a great pass rush led to Sycamore being tackle in the end zone for a safety. Hearn and Brad Ford combined on the tackle. The score was now 18-0. That all happened in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, new quarterback Troy Vandenbroek kept the ball around end and scored from 27 yards. Kicking for the extra point was Shane Mains. He made to put the Bucs ahead 25-0.
Another long punt return put Belvidere in great shape at Sycamore's 23 yard line. A few plays into the drive and Mains scored on a counter with Josh Hauser kicking the PAT to put South ahead by 32-0.
Later in the second quarter, Hauser scored as a halfback from 8 yards out. The extra point failed this time. The score stood at 38-0 at halftime.
In the second half, Max Hendrickson scored from 37 yards on a fullback dive. The PAT failed and that ended the scoring at 44-0. At that point, many second line players got good playing time and held their own during their play.
Defensively, strong performances were turned in by Cole Johnson , Josh Mitchell, and Hendrickson at linebackers, Hearn at defensive end, and Vandenbroek at safety. Nick Umlor had his consistent strong game at cornerback and Dylan Barr played well across from him.
