MONDAY NIGHT REVELETIONS

Last Monday night the Chicago Bears went out into the desert and played the lowly Arizona Cardinals. The mighty Bears Defense was up against the rookie with all the college hype and a college championship. Matt Leinert in his second game as a starter facing the Monsters of the Midway whose defense had been compared to the very best of all time. The stats were 14 for 37, 148 yds and 4 int’s wait that was Rex Grossman’s stats the same Grossman that was going to make Bear fans forget Sid Luckman and Jim McMahon. Leinert’s stats were 24 for 42, 232 yds and 2 td’s with zero interceptions. What we found out about the quarterbacks in this game is that they are both young and still have some growing pains to go through. Both come from pedigree backgrounds. Grossman tutored by the “Ole Ball Coach” and former Heisman trophy winner Steve Spurrier at the University of Florida and Leinert schooled at the closest thing to a Pro Football set up at USC under Pete Carroll and Norm Chow with his pro set offense the same one that got Carson Palmer NFL ready. These two remind me of a couple of NFL greats. Leinert with his coolness and confidence has some of the same traits as Joe Montana, and Grossman with his gunslinger mentality and throwing off his back foot has the same mindset as a certain current QB destined for the Hall of Fame in Brent Favre. The bottom line is that both have time on their side and the maturation process of Grossman will be under more scrutiny due to the dominance of the defense, one that has Super Bowl written all over it, as long as Sexy Rexy doesn’t think the defense is going to bail him out with 3 TD’s like they did Monday Night.
A couple of records were set in this game. Edgerrin James set the record for futility by gaining the least amount of yards (36 carries for 55 yds) for the number of carries. Matt Leinert set a record becoming the first QB in NFL history to throw two TD passes in the first quarter of the first two games he started. The Chicago Bears were the first team in NFL history to come back from 20 points down in the second half without scoring an offensive touchdown. Mike Brown, the Bears safety who scored on a fumble recovery at the end of the third quarter, now owns the franchise record for most defensive touchdowns (7) scored in a career.
