Wednesday, August 02, 2006 (Loves Park, IL) – Amy Flippo, Mark Bielefeldt, and Vern Brown took home feature wins on Illinois Material Handling & Material Services Faith Night at the races.

Amanda Maxwell grabbed the early lead in the first 15-lap Winged Women on Wheels feature event. She led the first five laps until Linnea Weerda moved from fourth starting position to take the lead. Weerda would pull away to the win. Amy Flippo got past Maxwell on the last lap for second. Elizabeth Weigelt and Sabrina Castillo rounded out the top five.

Sabrina Castillo in victory circle.

Castillo and Becky Proehl put on a great side-by-side battle for the first 11 laps of the second 15-lap feature. With four laps to go, Proehl got loose in turn two and this gave the lead to Castillo. The caution flew with three laps to go when Weigelt and Proehl got together in turns one and two causing Proehl to spin. Castillo continued to lead at the re-start and took the second feature win. Flippo got past Weerda on the last lap to take second. Proehl and Weigelt rounded out the top five.

Flippo’s two second place finishes gave her the overall win.

Vern Brown grabs another FIRA Feature win.

Vern Brown captured another FIRA Mini-Indy feature win.

Kai McNulty grabbed the early lead in the 20-lap feature event. John Ziellinga went to the outside of McNulty and took over the top spot lap 5. A lap later, Brown got on the inside of Ziellinga to take over the top spot. Brown cruised to an easy victory.

Mark Bielefeldt took home the rain shortened Hornet Swarm.

Alan Bekielewski took the early lead in the feature event. Bielefeldt got on the inside of Bekielewski to take over the top spot on lap 3. Bielefeldt continued to lead when Mother Nature brought out the caution and the officials called it a race with Bielefeldt taking the checkered and the red flag.

James Russell didn't expect to start his night of racing by ending up on the inside wall.

Linnea Weerda won the first Winged Women on Wheels feature.

This Saturday night, it’s another evening of NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series racing action with the NASCAR Late Models, Grand Nationals, Budweiser American Short Trackers, and the Coca-Cola RoadRunners. Plus, the evening will be capped off with the Finnegan’s RV World Famous Figure 8 Trailer Race.

BILDERBACK GRABS EIGHTH FEATURE WIN AT ROCKFORD

A great crowd was on hand at the Rockford Speedway.

Saturday, August 05, 2006 (Loves Park, IL) – Ricky Bilderback, George Sparkman, Matt Lundberg, and Terrance Robinson collected feature wins at the Rockford Speedway. An awesome crowd was on hand to see the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series along with the Finnegan’s RV World Famous Figure 8 Trailer Race.

George Sparkman collects his fourth feature win in the Budweiser American Short Tracker division.

Bilderback collects his eighth feature win in the NASCAR Late Model division.

Brett McCoy was the early leader in the 30-lap main event. McCoy held off an early battle from Josh Nelms for the top spot. While the two battled for the top spot, Bilderback easily worked his way through the field from his ninth starting position to take over the second spot from Nelms on lap 9. Three laps later, Bilderback would get past McCoy for the lead.

The caution flew on lap 18 when Tom Gille spun in turn one. Bilderback continued to lead. With ten laps to go, Nelms and McCoy were battling for second when Jeremy Miller snuck by them on the inside coming out of turn two.

Miller was never able to catch Bilderback and the current point leader cruised to another feature win. Miller took home second with Nelms holding off John Reynolds Jr. for third. McCoy rounded out the top five.

Lundberg took home his first feature win of the year in the Grand National division.

Dennis Basler took the early lead in the 25-lap feature event. Basler would hold on to the top spot until Lundberg moved from his sixth starting spot to challenge for the lead on lap 9. A lap later, Lundberg would become the new leader.

The caution flew on lap 22 when Brandon Eash spun in turns three and four. Lundberg continued to lead at the re-start while current point leader, Brock Behnke and Fred Nason battled for second.

At the finish it was Lundberg with the win. Nason would hold off Behnke for second. Doug Bennett got by Basler for fourth at the finish.

Sparkman collects his fourth Budweiser American Short Tracker feature win.

Jeff Turnure grabbed the early lead in the 25-lap feature event. Turnure held off Tim Melvin for the top spot on two attempts, but Melvin got by him on lap 7 for the lead.

Sparkman started tenth and took over the second spot by lap 12. It took Sparkman seven laps to chase down Melvin and take over the lead. Sparkman would pull away to the win.

Robinson held off Gene Marocco to take home the Coca-Cola RoadRunner feature.

Mid American Rookies Looking to Headline in ‘06 and Beyond              By Matt Panure

The Mid-American Series indeed may be the best way for up and coming drivers to break out of their local short track shell and get their names out at new venues around the Midwest. The Mid-American Stock Car Series has certainly produced some great drivers through the years. Drivers such as Peter Hernandez who is currently competing as part of NASCAR’s “Drive for Diversity” program with Bill McAnally Racing/RCR Development, Jake Ryan who is a top runner in the ASA Late Model Challenge Series and Eddie Hoffman Jr., a former ARTGO champion and short track ace, are past champions of the Mid-American Series.

The Mid-American rookie class of ‘06 is certainly ready to break out and shake up the front runners of the Series. The rookies realize that the opportunities for them can be great. For some drivers, the experience of the Mid-American Series is a reward in itself. “It seems like the place to be,” said leading rookie contender Jake Finney from Sycamore, Illinois. “There are all these veterans that know what they are doing and they can really show you how to race,” added Finney.

Finney was exposed to stock car racing by his father, Dave Finney who currently competes as part of the NASCAR Auto Zone Midwest Elite series. With a love for racing pumping through his veins, Finney made the plunge into a racing career, racing go-karts at the age of 14. After three years of go-kart racing, Finney decided to take a year off and build a Mid-American car. A sixth place finish at Rockford in April started Finney off on the right foot.

Finney has five top 10s in 2006, his best finish being fifth. He currently sits fifth in Mid-American points, 170 points back from point leader James Swan of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Finney’s 713 points place him as the top rookie, 187 points ahead of fellow rookie driver Dave Obermeyer of Slinger, Wisconsin.

It would seem that fate brought Obermeyer to the Mid-American Series, or perhaps brought the series to him. Obermeyer began racing Slinger Stingers, a type of street stock, on Sunday nights at the Slinger Speedway. In 2003, Slinger decided to scrap the Stinger division in favor of Mid-American style cars. Instead of finding a new place to race, Obermeyer decided to upgrade to a Mid-American car. With a new car and a new outlook, Obermeyer decided to hit the road. “I love the traveling,” stated Obermeyer, “it’s something different; not the same old grind week in and week out.”

While Obermeyer boasts a heat win at Rockford and a last chance win at Lake Geneva, sour luck has clouded his rookie campaign. Mechanical failures have plagued Obermeyer up to this point in the season, however, an accident while working on his car before the race at Grundy may be the reason why Obermeyer is set back from Finney.

Finney realizes that Obermeyer may indeed mount a charge toward the end of the Mid-American schedule. “Dave is really competitive. I think if hadn’t missed one race that he would be right on my back bumper,” said Finney.

Obermeyer relays the same positive attitude toward his competitor. “Jake’s a good racer who is doing well, I hope I can catch him,” proclaimed Obermeyer.

While both racers have differing backgrounds they share the same expectations for the 2006 season. Either driver would like to see a feature win and end up in the top ten in series points. They also share a bold quote, “I expect to win the rookie of the year title.”

Finney and Obermeyer will continue their bids to be the top rookie contender as the Mid-American Series makes its first visit to the Golden Sands Speedway in Plover, Wisconsin since 2001 on Friday, August 11th. The following race will be the Gary Vercauteran Memorial at Wisconsin International Raceway on Saturday, August 19th as part of the Blue Race.
