Drifting Returns To Speedway Saturday Sept. 9

Rockford, IL- The “California Style Drifting” Exhibition returns to the high banks of the Rockford Speedway Saturday Night September 9 during the Budweiser Night of Thrills. Over one dozen DRIFT drivers from across the region are expected to try their hand at drifting the quarter-mile oval, including defending event champion Brian Peter from Milwaukee, WI.

Drifting is a relatively new motorsport to the Midwest in which drivers attempt to set their car into a controlled slide, smoking their tires as well as delighting fans. “I am really looking forward to returning to Rockford, since my last appearance I have been working on some new tricks to test on those big banks.” Stated Peter. Also returning to action after a hard hit to the retaining wall in July is Darin Orth from Appleton, WI as well as Chicagoland’s Adam Krawzuk amongst others.

Krawzuk has also commented that he will attempt to take on Jim Stanis in Spectacular Drag action next Saturday. Stanis has been virtually unbeatable this season and many of the DRIFT competitors took notice. “A lot of us do autocross, we think we may have something for that guy.” A confident Krawzuk declared.

In addition to the “California Style Drifting” exhibition and Spectacular Drags, the Big Dawg Monster Truck will be headlining the Budweiser Night of Thrills. A Figure 8 School Bus Race, Stanley Steemer Hornets, Roll Over Contest, Stock Car Roller Derby, Smokey Burnout Championships along with many more events will be part of the evening’s festivities.

Spectator gates open at 5 with the first event at 7:07. Reserved tickets are now available, the cost is $15 for adults and $7.50 for children ages 11 and under. Tickets can be ordered online at www.rockfordspeedway.com or by calling the Speedway Box Office at 815-633-1500. Kids are reminded to arrive early for Monster Truck rides from 5:15 until 6:45. Rockford Speedway is located at the intersection of Illinois 173 and Forest Hills Road in Loves Park.

MILLER TAKES FEATURE, BILDERBACK GRABS SIXTH CHAMPIONSHIP
By: Kevin Ramsell

Saturday, September 02, 2006 (Loves Park, IL) – Jeremy Miller, Aaron Rude and Robert Roush took home feature wins on Championship Night at the Rockford Speedway. Ricky Bilderback, George Sparkman, and Gene Marocco won track championships.

Jeremy Miller (39) marches his way to the front in the NASCAR Late Model feature.

Jeremy Miller is all smiles after taking home the NASCAR Late Model feature win.

Miller collects his second feature win of the year in the NASCAR Late Model division.

Chad Misslich took the early lead in the 30-lap main event. Miller moved from his sixth starting position up towards the front. After the caution flew for Billy McCoy’s spin, Miller lined up on the inside of the second row for the re-start.

On lap 7, Miller got on the inside of Misslich to challenge for the lead. The two touched coming off of turn four. Misslich got loose and this handed the lead over to Miller.

Miller would hold off a late challenge from Jerry Gille to pick up the win. Bob Kahler would home third with Josh Nelms in fourth. Ricky Bilderback would round out the top five.

Bilderback would pick up his sixth straight NASCAR Late Model Championship. Only two other drivers have won six championships in a row. Bilderback joins the list along with Bobby Wilberg and the late Joe Shear.
Aaron Rude grabs his second Budweiser American Short Tracker feature win.

Rude picked up his second feature win of the year in the Budweiser American Short Tracker feature.

Rude grabbed the lead at the start of the 25-lap feature event. The battle that everyone was watching was between George Sparkman and Matt Berger battling for the championship. On lap 5, Sparkman moved from his eighth starting position and passed Berger for sixth on lap 5.

Justin Scott got up on the inside of Rude on lap 10 to challenge for the lead. The two exchanged the lead back and forth until lap Rude pulled away from Scott to take back the top spot.

On lap 22, Derrick Bettenhausen blew his motor coming down the front stretch erupting into flames. Bettenhausen was able to walk away but his night was over. The second caution flew on lap 23 when Lloyd Hawkins lost his right rear tire in turns one and two.

On the final re-start, Don Russell got on the inside of Rude and battled for the lead all the way to the checkered flag. At the stripe, it was Rude with the win by a bumper over Russell. Scott would come home third.

Sparkman would finish fourth ahead of Berger to capture the Budweiser American Short Tracker championship.
An excited Robert Roush holds up the hardware after capturing the Coca-Cola RoadRunner feature.

Roush used a last lap pass to take home the Coca-Cola Feature win.

Mike Leopold grabbed the early lead in the 20-lap feature event. Leopold would hold on to the lead until lap 4 when Greg Pruitt would get past Leopold for the lead.

Gene Marocco wrapped up the Coca-Cola RoadRunner championship when he started the feature event. It’s a good thing he did as he got a flat tire on lap 8 and fell a few laps off the pace.

With three laps to go, Pruitt blew his motor going into turn one and spun in front of the whole field causing a melee. This handed the lead over to Chris Gantz.

Gantz led the field on the re-start. Roush started 17th and with two laps to go, got on the inside of Gantz to challenge for the lead. On the last lap, Roush and Gantz battled for the top position going into turns three and four. At the line, it was Roush ahead of Gantz for the win. Charlie Frisch came home third with Kris Nilson in fourth. Beau Lawson came home fifth.

The racing action continues on Labor Day with Monday Funday. The Grand Nationals and Figure 8’s championship will be decided. The Legends, Bandoleros, Allison Legacy, SuperCups, and FIRA Formula Indy cars will be in action. Racing begins at 12:30 p.m.

Next Saturday night is the annual Night of Thrills at the Speedway. The Big Dawg Monster will make an appearance along with a School Bus Figure 8 race, Roll Over Contest, Smokey Burnout Championships, Figure 8 Train Race, Diesel Divas, Figure 8’s, Spectacular Drags, Hornets, and a Stock Car Roller Derby. The action gets underway at 7:07 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at the track office.

Make your plans now to be a part of the 41st Annual Chicago International Trucks National Short Track Championships. Ten divisions will be competing over three days on September 22-24th. “It’s One Great Racing Weekend.”
