NBHS WRESTLING
by Jeff Rapp

North Boone VIKINGS PLACE 3 WRESTLERS AT STATE for 2013 Season!
By Jeff Rapp

                Assembly hall – Champaign, Illinois
                February 14th – 16th , 2013

After sending their first ever wrestler to the IHSA state finals last season, this fledgling program returned to the class 1A IHSA state tournament with 3 wrestlers for the 2013 season and all come home with state honors in an exciting and impressive performance by all three NBHS representatives.

The first to place at state was 160 lbs. Senior Tyler Westlund. Westlund started the tournament with a 9-2 decision win over Zack Jackson (41-9) of Vandalia. In his next match Westlund came out on the short end of a 9-5 decision against Kye Reczek (39-3) from Clinton. With the loss Westlund found himself in the “wrestlebacks” bracket to get himself onto the medal stand. And the senior from North Boone would not be denied as he charged back into contention with back to back wins over Kody Goberville (22-7) from Peotone and Devin Morford (21-6) of Aledo. But a third place finish fell from his grasp with a loss to Layne Palm (34-8) from Winnebago. But finishing his high school wrestling career on a high note and with great resilience, Westlund came back to grab a 5th place state finish with a win over Caleb Wilson (36-13) of Leroy. Westlund finishes his 2013 season with an outstanding (37-5) record.

The next to place at state was 285 lbs. Junior Gus Eisele in a fantastic “underdog” story. Get ready for this! Eisele started the season unranked, and after back to back 2nd place finishes at regionals and sectionals, Eisel came to the state tournament ranked 9th. His first match was against 14th ranked Brendon Jostes (19-9) from Farmington. Eisele won this match with a first round fall in :43 seconds. That would put him against the #6 contender Derrick Romano (42-4) of Wilmington, and in a stunning move Eisele earned a second round fall to advance to the semi-finals. But waiting for him there was the #2 contender Morgan Supergan (33-2)  from Bismarck. Eisele was trailing 3-0 late in the third period when he slipped a Supergan hold, went to a take down and put the #2 contender on his back before the referee broke the action. When the ref returned the big men to the center of the matt, Eisel had erased a three point deficit and moved to a 4-3 advantage with :28 seconds left on the clock. Eisele held of the #2 contender’s assaults for the remaining time to advance to the championship round. And waiting for Eisele there was the #1 contender Josh Wallick, a senior from Gibson City with an impressive (49-0) record. After three impressive wins, Wallick proved to be too much for Eisele as the top contender pinned Eisele in the second round of an exciting match, that at one point, Eisele had the undefeated Wallick on his back for a near fall! Eisele brings home a 2nd place finish at state and finishes the 2013 season with a (28-7) record.

The final place finisher for the Vikings was returning (2012 state champion)  113 lbs. Sophomore Brandon Briggs. Briggs entered the state finals with the #1 seed and an undefeated record with 1st place finishes at both regionals and sectionals. Proving that there was no “Sophomore slump” for this young champion. Briggs opened up his state title run with a technical fall 17-0 in the second period over Jeremy O’Gara (34-9) from Roxana. His next opponent proved more challenging as Briggs wrestled smart and earned a 2-1 victory over Cameron Schwing (41-4) from Gibson City. In his third match, Briggs took another decision win 3-2 over Tate Ruffner (31-6) from Leroy and for the second time in as many years Briggs again was in the championship match where he faced Corey Jurzak (42-4) from Coal City. The Sophomore once again proved his skills on the matt as he racked up a 7-0 decision win, to once again stand atop the medal stand. This year as a two time state champion as he concludes a perfect 2013 season with an impressive record of (38-0)
“Hat’s off” to Coach Baker and his staff as the Vikings wrestlers come home with 1st, 2nd and 5th place finishes at state! A task that many other schools with much older wrestling programs are still seeking to achieve. Congratulations to all on a great season and a job “very well” done.

North Boone Vikings send 3 wrestlers to sectionals

IHSA Class 1A Wrestling Regionals
Harvard High School 2/2/13

The Vikings wrestling squad as a team finished 4th at the Harvard regional's out of eight teams total last Saturday with three out of five wrestlers advancing to sectionals and two of those wrestlers bringing home a regional championship.

The first to advance onward for the Vikings is Sophomore Brandon Briggs (31-0) at 113 lbs. Briggs advances as the regional champ with a win by fall in the 3rd period over Harvard's Mark Struck (25-14).
After the first period the score was 0 - 0 with both wrestlers looking for the advantage. In the second period it was all Briggs who scored 4 points on back to back take downs then another 3 on a near fall by the end of the 2nd period to take a 7 - 0 lead into the final period. Half way into the 3rd period a tired Struck could not hold off the 2012 state champion any longer and Briggs scored the fall with 1:08 left on the 3rd period clock.
Although feeling confident going into the match, Briggs commented after his win "that was tougher than expected, he really wrestled well"

The next to represent the Vikings at sectionals is Senior Tyler Westlund (31-2) at 160 lbs. Westlund also advances as the regional champ with a win by decision (3-1) over Harvard's Matt Wheeler (29-16).
Again it was a slow start with both wrestlers showing patience and looking for an advantage as the openning period ended 0-0. In the second period Westlund stepped up the pace and moved the match to his advantage by staying aggresive. Wheeler managed to hold Westlund at bay and ended the second period with the score still 0-0. In the third period with North Boone's Westlund starting in the down position, half way into the period. It was an aggressive start at the whistle with Westlund exploding to his feet and breaking free to score 1 point and instantly going on offense with a take down to score another 2 to advance his score to 3-0 with :38 seconds left. Westlund remained aggressive and held off his opponent to take the championship.
"I wanted to stay aggressive out there, keep the pace and wrestle my match" commented Westlund after his win.

The final Viking wrestler to advance to sectionals is Junior Gus Eisele (22-5) at 285 lbs. Eisele placed 2nd at regionals loosing his final match by decision (0-2) to Harvard's Adam Freimund (37-4).
This was tough match for both the heavy weight competitors. Eisele down by 2 with only seconds left in the match slid out of the grasp of his opponent and into a reversal that would have scored 2 points for him, but the move was finshed "litterally" 1 second to late and no points awarded for the effort.

Just missing advancing for the Vikings with 4th place finishes was 195 lbs. Junior Nathan Bodey loosing his final match by fall to Aurora Central Catholic's Karlo Valenzuela and Freshman 120 lbs. Alex Manriquez loosing by decision (1-6) to Genoa-Kingston's Mikey Semmens.

"We are looking for all three of us to make it to the state tournament, we all have a really good chance" commented Briggs. "We have all been working hard for this, we should do really good next week" added Westlund.

Good luck at sectionals Vikings and congratulations on a great job at regionals!

01/11/12-BELVIDERE vs. BELVIDERE NORTH

Bragging rights go to the Belvidere Bucs! Belvidere Boys' Varsity Basketball Team beats crosstown rival, Belvidere North, 48-36.

The Bucs' next game is next Friday against the E-Rabs at Rockford East. This should be a good game against the top two teams in the NIC-10 Conference and should determine who really is king of the hill.

BHS BOYS BASKETBALL
01/04/12-BELVIDERE vs. BOYLAN

The Belvidere Bucs took on the Boylan Titans on Thursday, 01/03/12 in Belvidere. It has been 25 long years since the Bucs have beaten the Titans. The last win Belvidere had against Boylan was in February 1988 at Boylan. Belvidere would mark a W in the win column with a win, 64-55. The Bucs would have four players in double figures (Kane Steger-19 points, Darius Brown-12 points, Joe Byers-10 points) and Zach Wallace (10 points). Besides ending the losing streak against Boylan, the win also signifies that the Bucs are now tied for 1st place with East and Auburn. On 1/4/13, the Bucs held a student assembly and honored the team with the cutting down of the basketball net to commorate the win.

Prior to the Varsity game, the Bucs honored past assistant basketball coach, Jerry Guse. Coach Guse was an assistant several years ago under current head coach, Aaron Pearson. Both Pearson and assistant coach, Nate Lister were coached by Coach Guse when they attended high school at Rockford Lutheran. Coach Guse has also been a coach for Rockford Lutheran for many years. Recently, Guse was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Several teams across the area and Buc basketball alumnus attended the the game in his honor.

Belvidere Tornados Successful this Fall

The Belvidere Tornadoes did great at Nationals this year. They had two teams win the National Title for their age division, a runner up for 12 year old boys and a national champion for the 6 year old boy division ! Coach Rick Menges and his assistant coaches former Tornadoes Melissa, Rebecca and Monica Schwartz did a great job leading this team to victory!

Viking Wrestling kicks off 2012-13 season
By Jeff Rapp

               November 21, 2012

North Boone High school -

North Boone Vikings (host) vs. Freeport Pretzels & Guilford Vikings

Happy Thanksgiving Vikings fan's, and with the November holiday, it marks the start of the winter sports program. Boys and girls basketball kick off with tournaments this week and one of my favorites. Prep (high school)  IHSA wrestling

With the start of the Vikings 5th wrestling season, the club as whole has a few more numbers than seasons past and some fine wrestler's to compete for the school this season.

When we talk NBHS wrestling we need to start with the IHSA 2011-12 - 106# 2A state champion and last years Freshman phenom Brandon Briggs. Briggs this season is competing at 113# for his Sophomore year and kicked it off in a solid performance against his Freeport challenger by scoring a Pin (1:29) into the first round to record his first win of the season. Guilford offered no opponent to Briggs for this match.

Coming back for another season on the mat is 160# Senior Tyler Westlund, looking to advance deeper into the post season. Westlund kicked off his season with a second round pin. After running up 9-25 lead on points against his Guilford opponent, Westlund pinned his challenger (1:05) into the 2nd period. Freeport offered no opponent to Westlund for this match.

At 182#, Junior Nathan Bodey split his two matches on the night. In his first match he pinned his Freeport challenger (0:21) into the second. Against his Guilford challenger Bodey got pinned (0:32) into the second after three consecutive reversals between Bodey and his challenger, he found himself precariously on his back and unable to escape.

At 220#, Senior Caleb Hoey also split his two matches. Hoey against his Freeport challenger was pinned (1:26) into the first round. In Hoey's second match against a very aggressive Guilford opponent, he staved off his opponents assaults and the Guilford challenger was disqualified in the second after his third technical (an illegal headlock) after two illegal grasp fouls. Hoey was awarded the win (as good as pin) with the disqualification.

Other Varsity wrestlers Gus Eisele (did not compete) and Alex West was Pinned (1:35) into the first against his Guilford opponent (Freeport offered no opponent to West)

Underclassman to watch:  Freshman Nate Montemayor impressively pinned his Guilford opponent in the first round (his only match on the evening).

All in all, the Viking wrestlers as a whole competed well in a pin or be pinned evening. No matches between North Boone and their opponents were decided by points. Many other underclassmen competed excitingly well in their win and/or loss on the evening as this program continues to grow.

The Vikings return to the mat next week in Marengo 11/27 with Genoa, and 11/29 at Oregon with Harvard and Rockford Lutheran "Big Northern Smack down" (a must see for wrestling fans)

Go Vikings! and good luck this season.
